At the maximum loan amount, the funding is expected to assist around 32,000 households across the state.

Premier Chris Minns said the initiative aims to address one of the biggest barriers preventing households from investing in energy-saving technologies.

“For many households, the upfront cost of these upgrades has simply been too high,” Minns said.

Who Is Eligible?

The scheme is available to NSW homeowners with a combined annual household income of $210,000 or less.

In addition to the interest-free loan program, eligible concession card holders and households earning less than $80,000 per year will be able to access separate cash rebates of up to $4,000 later this year. The NSW Government has allocated $77 million towards these direct payments.

Households eligible for both forms of assistance are encouraged to apply for the cash rebate first and then use the loan to cover any remaining costs.

Renters may also access the scheme, provided they obtain approval from their landlord before proceeding with the upgrades.

What Upgrades Are Covered?

The program covers a broad range of energy-saving technologies and home improvements, including:

Solar panel systems

Home battery storage

Solar hot water systems

Reverse-cycle air conditioning

Switchboard upgrades

Ceiling insulation

Draught-proofing

Double glazing

Induction cooktops

Electric vehicle chargers

DC ceiling fans

The scheme allows homeowners to bundle multiple upgrades into a single loan, reducing the need to spread investments across several years.

How the Costs Stack Up

The NSW interest-free loan is intended to work alongside existing federal solar incentives, helping homeowners reduce their upfront costs even further.

For a typical home, installing a 6.6kW solar system with a 10kWh battery generally costs between $18,000 and $22,000 before any rebates, subsidies, or financial incentives are applied.

Under the federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STC) framework, homeowners typically receive an upfront discount of around $1,500 to $2,500, which is generally applied automatically by the installer.

In addition, the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program currently provides a rebate of approximately $244 per kilowatt-hour for the first 14kWh of battery capacity. For a 10kWh battery, this equates to a rebate of around $2,440.

After both federal incentives are applied, the remaining out-of-pocket cost generally falls between $14,000 and $18,000. The NSW interest-free loan can therefore cover most, or in some cases all, of the remaining installation cost over a 10-year repayment period.

Should Households Act Now or Wait?

For households earning less than $80,000 annually, the additional cash subsidy may make it worthwhile to wait until the rebate becomes available later this year. However, the commencement date has not yet been confirmed.

For households facing immediate pressure from rising electricity bills, the interest-free loan is available now.

For all other eligible households earning up to $210,000, applications are open immediately. Industry observers also note that the federal battery rebate reduces in value every six months and is expected to be lower from January 2027.

With more than half of NSW homes already equipped with rooftop solar and around 13,000 battery systems being installed nationwide each month, the combination of state and federal incentives currently represents one of the strongest support packages available for households looking to reduce their energy costs and improve energy independence.

NSW homeowners earning up to $210,000 in combined household income can now apply for interest-free loans of up to $15,000 to fund solar, battery storage and a range of home…

[8

post-464","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
