{"id":476,"date":"2026-08-17T05:01:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T05:01:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/?p=476"},"modified":"2026-08-17T05:01:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T05:01:53","slug":"consumers-take-centre-stage-as-aemo-releases-2026-integrated-system-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/consumers-take-centre-stage-as-aemo-releases-2026-integrated-system-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumers Take Centre Stage as AEMO Releases 2026 Integrated System Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1264\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Consumers-Take-Centre-Stage-as-AEMO-Releases-2026-Integrated-System-Plan.webp\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Consumers-Take-Centre-Stage-as-AEMO-Releases-2026-Integrated-System-Plan.webp 1264w, https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Consumers-Take-Centre-Stage-as-AEMO-Releases-2026-Integrated-System-Plan-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Consumers-Take-Centre-Stage-as-AEMO-Releases-2026-Integrated-System-Plan-1024x684.webp 1024w, https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Consumers-Take-Centre-Stage-as-AEMO-Releases-2026-Integrated-System-Plan-768x513.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1264px) 100vw, 1264px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are playing an increasingly significant role in Australia\u2019s energy transition, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), which released its <strong>2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP)<\/strong> on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO says households are becoming more actively involved in how they generate, use and manage electricity, with the rapid uptake of rooftop solar and home batteries changing the way Australia\u2019s energy system operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEarlier, few households may have thought of what lay behind the three-point plugs, or even how much electricity they used,\u201d AEMO said in the ISP. \u201cNow, there is everyday engagement on how they source electricity and big changes to how, and how much, they use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Home batteries reshape Australia\u2019s energy future<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing adoption of <strong>home batteries<\/strong>, one of the key consumer energy resources (CER), has strengthened its role in AEMO\u2019s long-term planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final 2026 ISP has increased its forecast for home battery capacity under the <strong>Step Change scenario<\/strong>. While AEMO\u2019s draft ISP released in December 2025 forecast around <strong>27 GW of home battery capacity by 2050<\/strong>, the final plan now expects the home battery fleet to reach approximately <strong>35 GW<\/strong> by the middle of the century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2050, AEMO expects around <strong>two-thirds of homes with <a href=\"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/rooftop-solar-panel-and-solar-types\/\">rooftop solar<\/a> to also have battery storage<\/strong>. More than half of these battery systems are expected to participate in <strong>virtual power plants (VPPs)<\/strong>, allowing household batteries to collectively support the wider electricity grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rising participation implies consumers are no longer merely electricity users. Increasingly, households with solar and batteries can generate, store and export electricity when the grid needs it most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rooftop solar continues to grow<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO has revised its estimate of rooftop solar capacity in the NEM down from <strong>25 GW in the draft ISP to 20 GW<\/strong> in the final plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this adjustment, rooftop solar is still expected to expand significantly under the Step Change scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, around <strong>36 per cent of suitable homes across NEM regions have rooftop solar<\/strong>. AEMO expects this figure to increase to <strong>47 per cent by 2035<\/strong> and <strong>56 per cent by 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growth is expected to be supported by continued reductions in solar costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2050, AEMO forecasts that rooftop and small-scale solar capacity could reach approximately <strong>87 GW<\/strong> across the NEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rooftop solar is already making a significant contribution to Australia\u2019s electricity supply. During the first quarter of 2026, rooftop solar generated <strong>16 per cent of NEM electricity<\/strong>, exceeding the contribution from grid-scale solar at 11 per cent, wind at 15 per cent and hydro at 5 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Batteries could reduce evening peak demand<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO says the continued growth of consumer energy resources could also reduce the amount of large-scale generation and network infrastructure required to achieve net zero at the lowest possible cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Optimal Development Path (ODP), which represents the lowest-cost pathway to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, greater adoption of rooftop solar and <a href=\"https:\/\/aykasolar.com.au\/solar-batteries-in-australia\/\">batteries <\/a>could reduce the need for some grid-scale investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO estimates that households with solar and batteries can meet more of their own electricity needs while also exporting energy to the grid during the evening peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the ISP, this can reduce average evening peak grid demand by around <strong>1 kW per household<\/strong> compared with homes that have solar without battery storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reduction in peak demand could also help lower wholesale electricity prices during high-demand periods, creating benefits for consumers across the NEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transmission investment remains essential<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing contribution from household energy resources does not remove the need for major investment in Australia\u2019s electricity network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO has increased its estimate of the net market benefits from transmission investment from <strong>$24 billion in the draft ISP to $28 billion<\/strong> in the final 2026 ISP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan continues to forecast that approximately <strong>6,000 kilometres of new transmission infrastructure<\/strong> will need to be added to the NEM\u2019s existing 44,000-kilometre network to support the Optimal Development Path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Distribution networks included in planning<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, the 2026 ISP also includes distribution network development in its modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEMO estimates that around <strong>$600 million of distribution network investment<\/strong> will be required to support the Optimal Development Path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes approximately <strong>$383 million<\/strong> to connect grid-scale generation and storage within distribution networks, along with <strong>$214 million<\/strong> to support refinements needed to accommodate consumer energy resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inclusion reflects the growing impact of rooftop solar, batteries and other household energy technologies on local electricity networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grid stability becomes increasingly important<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 ISP also includes system security costs for the first time, with approximately <strong>$3 billion expected to be required through to 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is lower than the <strong>$3.6 billion<\/strong> forecast in the draft ISP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investment will support technologies needed to maintain grid stability as coal-fired power generation retires. These technologies include <strong>synchronous condensers with flywheels<\/strong> and <strong>grid-forming battery energy storage systems (BESS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grid-forming batteries can provide important services such as frequency control, voltage stability and system strength, helping maintain a reliable electricity system as the generation mix changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>$106 billion investment needed by 2050<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the Step Change scenario, AEMO\u2019s Optimal Development Path requires approximately <strong>$106 billion of investment through to 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investment will cover grid-scale generation, energy storage, firming capacity and electricity network infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the rapid growth of household solar and batteries is changing the role consumers play in Australia\u2019s electricity system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 ISP highlights a clear shift: households are increasingly becoming active participants in the energy market, generating and storing their own electricity while also supporting the grid during periods of high demand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Consumers are playing an increasingly significant role in Australia\u2019s energy transition, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), which released its 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP) on Thursday.
