Victoria Extends Neighbourhood Battery Program to Support Cleaner, Cheaper Energy

The Victorian Government has officially started Round Three of its $6.6 million 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program, reinforcing its commitment to community-led clean energy solutions.

This latest round will boost the total number of neighbourhood batteries to more than 100 across the state. These systems store cheap, renewable energy when it’s abundant and release it when it’s most needed, helping to lower energy bills, ease pressure on the grid, and improve energy reliability in local communities.

Each battery project is eligible for up to $400,000 in grant funding, with organisations able to apply for multiple installations under a single proposal. Applications open from Tuesday, 15 July 2025.

The program is already rolling out 90 batteries across Victoria and has funded backup power systems in publicly accessible buildings to support communities during blackouts. The batteries are designed not only to save money but to strengthen energy security and resilience, especially during peak demand.

Eligible applicants include not-for-profit groups, local councils, co-operatives, schools, universities, public sector bodies, businesses, and other agencies throughout the state.

Previous funding rounds have supported projects like those by Housing Choices Australia, which installed six neighbourhood batteries across six housing sites. These systems are expected to cut electricity bills by around $200 per year for tenants, while also supplying up to five hours of backup power for essential services such as lifts, lighting, and emergency systems.

Victorian Acting Premier Ben Carroll said the initiative is about giving power back to communities.

“We’re on the side of Victorian families – helping drive down the cost of power bills with cheaper, cleaner renewable energy,” he said.

Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio echoed this, noting the broader benefits of battery technology.

“We’re helping communities save their money, giving them more control, and driving the shift to cleaner, more efficient power.”

Local MP Anthony Cianflone highlighted the significance for his electorate.

“This will make a real impact for communities, including Pascoe Vale, which will build a more reliable power supply, while also slashing costs on energy bills.”
